Algeno currently manages the heating systems in over 50,000 apartments in Sweden. Our model-based control system ensures that property owners minimize their costs and reduce their properties’ carbon footprint through smarter optimization of heating systems.
The past heating season has been a period of significant progress and validation for Algeno. We are incredibly proud to present the positive results our customers’ properties have achieved with the help of our heating system management service. The fact that all of our customers choose to continue using our service is the strongest proof of the value we create—through reduced energy costs, improved indoor climate, and effective digital operational support.
During the season, we had the privilege of working with customers across Sweden, which gave us unique insight into how our service performs under varying conditions. What pleases us most is that all our customers have experienced good results and decided to continue using our service. This is proof that Algenos’ solution not only meets but exceeds expectations when it comes to optimizing heating systems and ensuring a consistent and stable indoor climate.
We would like to highlight three key areas where Algeno’s service has made a significant contribution: improved indoor climate, energy savings, and a tool for operational support.
A pleasant and stable indoor climate is not just a matter of comfort, but also a key factor in tenant satisfaction. Traditional heating system controls can often lead to significant temperature fluctuations, resulting in an unpredictable indoor climate and dissatisfied tenants. Algeno solves this problem with proactive, model-based control.
One of our key strengths is our ability to create a noticeably more consistent indoor climate. Our service, which is based on unique mathematical models that learn the behavior and characteristics of each property, anticipates and compensates for external influences such as solar radiation, changes in outdoor temperature, or wind conditions. This directly results in happier tenants who experience a consistent and comfortable temperature, regardless of external conditions.
To illustrate this, we compare properties using our active control system not only with their own historical data, but also with so-called twin properties that have not had our service activated. Figure 1 shows an example of indoor temperature over time in a connected property controlled by Algeno (blue) compared to a similar property with only local control (orange). This comparison method demonstrates how our optimized control reduces unwanted temperature fluctuations. While twin properties may exhibit significant fluctuations in indoor temperature over the course of a day or season, we observe a more stable indoor climate in our connected properties.

To more clearly demonstrate how much more stable the indoor climate becomes with Algeno’s control system, one can analyze histograms of hourly averages for a building over the entire heating season. Figure 2 shows two examples of buildings where we compare them with identical buildings that use only local control systems.

We observe that indoor temperature uniformity improves significantly with the help of Algeno’s heating optimization. Variations in indoor temperature are reduced, which means that the average temperature of the entire building can be lowered without an increase in complaints or service calls. Figure 2 shows two buildings where they have successfully maintained an average temperature that is 0.6°C and 0.4°C lower, respectively, than comparable twin buildings, with a much more consistent indoor climate and no increase in complaints or service calls. With the new, more consistent indoor climate, the temperature can be lowered further to achieve additional energy savings.
The examples on the left are just that—examples (albeit real ones)—but they reflect a pattern we see recurring among all our clients and properties. This season’s evaluations clearly show that our solution makes a difference in practice, even though each property has its own unique circumstances.
At a time when heating costs are one of the biggest challenges for property owners, the ability to achieve significant energy savings is crucial. Algeno’s service is designed to achieve the desired indoor climate while minimizing energy consumption. Thanks to our model-based MPC algorithms, which adapt to the building’s specific characteristics and upcoming weather, we can control the system in a way that minimizes unnecessary heating.
We measure energy savings by having our customers conduct their own energy analysis based on normal-year-adjusted energy figures or another preferred method. This enables a fair comparison of energy usage before and after the implementation of our service, regardless of how mild or harsh the weather season has been. For all of our customers, we observed energy savings compared to previous years, but also compared to other similar properties that do not use Algeno’s active control system. This not only means lower operating costs for property owners but also contributes to a reduced environmental impact.
The exact savings vary depending on the property’s unique conditions and previous level of optimization, but the consistently positive trend demonstrates the power of our predictive and adaptive control system. It is an investment that pays for itself quickly and continues to generate value year after year. We are pleased that our customers are evaluating our solutions, and we’d be happy to put you in touch if you’re interested in learning how they conducted their evaluations and what their experience has been working with Algeno.
A question our customers often ask is how much our algorithms can reduce energy consumption in buildings that already have room-compensated control systems, which monitor indoor conditions and adjust the supply water temperature based on the indoor climate. During the heating season, we have compared results to previous years as well as to twin buildings with feedback-based control systems and have been able to demonstrate a reduction in energy consumption when using Algeno’s control system.
Optimizing heating systems isn’t just about automated control; it’s also about giving property owners and operations teams the tools they need to work smarter and more proactively. Our web-based application was developed specifically for this purpose.
Algeno’s application serves as a powerful operational support tool. It provides a comprehensive overview and the ability to continuously monitor all connected properties in real time. It can serve as a vital tool where operations staff can monitor indoor temperatures, system status, and much more, all presented in a clear and organized manner. The app streamlines workflows, reduces the need for physical inspections, and gives operations staff more time to focus on strategic tasks rather than reactive problem-solving.
“Algeno has the best user interface on the market for its web-based heating optimization application.” — Head of Technology Development at one of Sweden’s largest property owners.
The most recent heating season has once again demonstrated Algeno’s ability to deliver tangible and measurable improvements for property owners throughout Sweden. We look forward to continuing to develop our service and helping even more property owners optimize their heating systems for a more sustainable and cost-effective future. Algeno’s customers regularly evaluate their collaboration with us and the performance of our service. Would you like to speak with one of our customers or users?
